Athletes are assigned classification categories based on functional abilities including impaired muscle power/range of movement, limb deficiency and visual impairment.
Competition distances are based on the type of bicycle used, as well as an athlete's functional ability. The lower the athlete’s class number, the greater the functional limitations.
