U.S. Army announces locations for 2025, 2026 and 2028 Warrior Games
JOINT BASE LANGLEY-EUSTIS, Va. – Aug. 13, 2024 – U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, host of the Department of Defense Warrior Games, has announced the locations for the 2025, 2026 and 2028 events. The Warrior Games will return to Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2025. The Warrior Games will be held in San Antonio, Texas, in 2026 and 2028.
“We are excited to host this event in locations with a deep tradition of supporting the military, especially those service members going through recovery journeys. These men and women deserve our support as they overcome these obstacles,” said Gen. Gary Brito, commanding general of TRADOC. “It’s an honor for us to once again host these athletes, along with their families, friends, supporters and community, for this inspiring adaptive sports event that plays such a powerful role in the recovery of wounded, ill and injured military members and veterans.”
The annual Warrior Games was first held in 2010 and features hundreds of wounded, ill and injured military servicemembers and veterans who compete in adaptive sporting events such as wheelchair basketball, cycling, indoor rowing, sitting volleyball, and others as part of their recovery journeys.
The Warrior Games were first held in Colorado Springs from 2010 to 2014 at the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center, and in 2018 at the U.S. Air Force Academy. The event will return in July 2025 at Colorado College and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center. Approximately 200 wounded, ill and injured military members and veterans are expected to compete in adaptive sports as part of their recovery journeys.
“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome the Department of Defense Warrior Games back to Colorado Springs. Hosting these inspiring games once again is a tremendous honor for our city and a testament to our deep commitment to supporting our nation’s wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans,” said Megan Leatham, president and CEO, Colorado Springs Sports Corporation. “The return of the Warrior Games is not just a major sporting event; it is a celebration of community, courage and the unyielding spirit of our heroes. We are excited to provide a world-class platform where their stories of determination and triumph can inspire us all.”
The 2026 and 2028 Warrior Games will be held in San Antonio, Texas, marking the first time the city will host the event. The 2020 Warrior Games were scheduled to take place in San Antonio but were cancelled due to COVID-19.
“We’re excited to welcome the Department of Defense Warrior Games and recognize our wounded, ill or injured service members in Military City, USA, home of the DoD’s largest medical center,” said Jenny Carnes, president and CEO of San Antonio Sports. “San Antonio Sports’ mission is to transform our community through the power of sport. We know that this competition is about more than just athletics. We look forward to celebrating sport as a means of empowering individuals, giving confidence, strengthening community and being an integral part of the recovery journey.”
The Warrior Games serve to enhance the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded warriors by providing them exposure to adaptive sports. Military paralympic adaptive sports programs help wounded service members and veterans build strength and endurance and draw inspiration from their teammates. Participation in the Warrior Games represents the culmination of a service member’s involvement in an adaptive sports program and demonstrates the incredible potential of wounded warriors through competitive sports.
Details about the sports schedule, viewing opportunities, corporate sponsorships and more will be available closer to the event.
