• Each team is allowed up to eight start rights in the powerlifting competition.
  • During the bench press, athletes must lower the bar to the chest, hold it motionless on the chest, and then press it upward to arm’s length with locked elbows.


  • Bench press is the sport's single discipline and is open to male and female athletes.
  • Athletes compete solely by body weight divisions regardless of functional ability. There are four weight categories per gender - Women up to 55kg, 67kg, 86kg, and 86kg+; Men – up to 72kg, 88kg, 107kg, 107kg+.

  • Athletes use a specially designed bench press in which their legs are rested on bench. This feature allows for equal and fair competition between athletes who may or may not have lower limbs.
  • Powerlifting is the ultimate test of upper-body strength and can sometimes see athletes lift more than three times their own body weight.
