Sgt. Jimmy Candelario is originally from Dorado, Puerto Rico. The 42-year-old enlisted in the Army National Guard in 2005, where he worked in logistics, operating and overseeing heavy machinery. Candelario deployed to Afghanistan in 2011, where he was diagnosed with PTSD and sustained injuries to his back. Despite these challenges, he continued to serve and was deployed to Puerto Rico in 2014 and 2015.
In 2016, Sgt. Candelario moved to Tampa, Florida, and continued his National Guard duties. In 2020, he start pursuing a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. His academic journey was interrupted in 2022 when he was deployed to Playas, New Mexico, to support the Border Patrol. In November 2023, he was sent to the Soldier Recovery Unit (SRU) at Fort Stewart, Georgia, where he began rehabilitation for his injuries and received treatment for his mental health.
During his time at the SRU, Sgt. Candelario underwent knee surgery and have been working through physical therapy while also participating in various sports camps. These camps have not only supported his physical recovery but have also been vital in improving his mental health and motivating him to stay focused on his recovery.
As he moves forward, he is committed to finishing his degree, advancing in his career, and embracing new challenges. His time in the military, combined with the support he received in recovery, has taught him the value of perseverance and the strength that comes
from facing adversity.
