Tam Hoang

Staff Sgt. Tam Hoang dedicated a decade to the Army Reserves, with deployments in Qatar in 2016-2017, Africa in 2018-2020, and Syria in 2022-2024. On the last tour to Syria, his life changed forever. After surviving a UXO and drone explosion, he was struck with two heavy traumatic brain injuries within the span of two months.

The 29-year-old Staff Sgt. thought his life was over until he arrived at JBLM SRU where he was introduced to adaptive sports. He says adaptive sports gave him a sense of purpose and contributed to the improvement of his mental and physical health. Staff Sgt. Hoang felt like he was a part of a community, being around other soldiers who
understood his struggle. He would like to thank his wife for walking alongside him on his path to recovery.
