JOINT BASE LANGLEY EUSTIS, Va. – December 7, 2022 – Army’s Training and Doctrine Command, host of the Department of Defense (DoD) Warrior Games, will introduce the Warrior Games Challenge in June 2023, taking place at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, Calif.

“On behalf of the U.S. Army, we remain honored to host the Warrior Games while introducing another evolution of this premier sporting and recovery event,” said Gen. Gary Brito, commander of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. “These incredible warrior-athletes have overcome tremendous obstacles, and we are humbled to provide this opportunity to support their recovery through adaptive sports.”

Like the Warrior Games, the Warrior Games Challenge remains focused on recovery through adaptive sports giving competitors from all service branches across the U.S. military an opportunity to train together for the first time outside of the official Warrior Games. The Warrior Games Challenge will be modified, removing some elements of a traditional Warrior Games, but still giving wounded, ill, and injured service members and veterans from across the United States military an opportunity to come together to train and compete alongside fellow warriors and support each other through their individual recovery journeys.

“We are excited to introduce the Warrior Games Challenge, and we are committed to delivering the same focus and dedication to supporting wounded, ill, and injured military members,” said Warrior Games Director David Paschal. “Military Paralympic adaptive sports programs help wounded service members and veterans build strength and endurance, and we will continue to deliver on that promise.”

First held in 2010, Warrior Games celebrates the resiliency and dedication of wounded, ill, and injured active duty and veteran U.S. military service members. In June 2023, hundreds of these elite-athletes will compete in adaptive sporting events such as wheelchair basketball, cycling, indoor rowing, and sitting volleyball among others during the games.

The Warrior Games serves to enhance the recovery and rehabilitation of wounded warriors by providing them exposure to adaptive sports. Participation in the Warrior Games represents the culmination of a service member’s involvement in an adaptive sports program and demonstrates the incredible potential of wounded warriors through competitive sports.
