Mercedes Rangel

Staff Sgt. Mercedes Rangel served 15 years in the U.S. Army Reserve before sustaining a herniated disc during a deployment, which caused significant right-sided weakness and limited mobility. Rangel’s turning point came when she was reassigned to the Soldier Recovery Unit at Joint Base San Antonio. Through the SRU and Army Recovery Care Program’s adaptive sports and structured therapy, she began to rebuild her strength and rediscover her purpose. While at the SRU, Rangel also began processing a military sexual assault she experienced in 2018, using specialized therapies to confront the trauma she had compartmentalized for six years. In 2025, Rangel returned to duty. Today, she completes in bodybuilding, serves as a spin instructor, and mentors Soldiers navigating their own battles, whether physical, mental, or unseen. Rangel’s story is one of reclaiming identify and returning to the fight with greater strength, and she speaks openly about resilience and the power of seeking help.
