Master at Arms Second Class Storm Oliver found out she was sick while on a temporary additional duty at for a school at Naval Station Norfolk. After her diagnosis, her orders to the schoolhouse were canceled and she was suddenly on limited duty status, far from home or her duty station overseas. She joined Navy Wounded Warrior at the advice of her medical case manager to help navigate the unexpected challenges for her housing, command accountability, and other non-medical needs. Oliver could then focus on the arduous process of finding a diagnosis and starting her recovery.
Before getting sick, Oliver was a martial artist and stayed fairly active. When she was well enough, her Navy Wounded Warrior care team suggested she try adaptive sports. She attended her first introductory camp in November 2023 in Springfield, Va. There, she met dozens of other sailors and coastguardsmen who were on their own recovery journeys, as well as the supportive staff and coaches, many being former athletes themselves.
“It was extremely healing for me to learn through the activities at the Intro Camp that I could still be good at something,”
In the 2024 Warrior Games, Oliver will compete in field, powerlifting, and swimming.
