SPC Gerald Blakley’s herniated disc in his lower back landed him at the Joint Base Lewis McChord Soldier Recovery Unit. The National Guardsman says his SRU experience was lengthy but ultimately fulfilling. Life took a drastic turn post-injury, confining him to a wheelchair for a year and leading to eventual medical retirement. Despite the challenges, Blakley cherishes his Army journey and the profound impact it had on the family. “The Warrior Games represent more than just competition; they symbolize my resilience and the belief that, despite a disability, I can still be active and competitive.” He says competing on Team Army would be an affirmation of his worth and a testament to the strength within. He is honored to represent his fellow soldiers, proving that setbacks do not define them. “A quote that resonates with me and fuels my journey is, Strength does not come from the body… It comes from the will.
