SSG Derrick Thompson was born in Chicago, IL and graduated from Lawton High School in Lawton, OK. He joined the Air Force Reserves in 2004 and joined the Army in 2005. Since then, SSG Thompson has completed 36 months of combat time overseas and was awarded two Combat Action Badges. During a tour in Korea, he was diagnosed with diabetes in 2022 after not feeling well for a few months.
He went to the ER and was sent back out. Then, he was brought back into the ER and stayed there for two weeks. He was told he could have died during that week. After struggling for a few months, he adapted to the medicine, and was sent back to the states to be released out of the Army. In 2023, the Continuation of Active-Duty waiver was approved right before SSG Thompson went to his first Warrior Games. He is currently married and has three kids, one of whom was born as soon as returning from Warrior Games in 2023.
SSG Thompson is working at Brooke Army Medical Center as a project manager and going to retire with 20 years active duty in July 2025. He plans to continue competing as long as he can because he loves competition.
