Gene Calantoc

Retired SSG Gene Calantoc and his wife Miho have three kids (Mica, Leina, and Kai) and a Frenchie puppy named Blu. Born in the Philippines, he moved to the United States when he was 12 years old in 1997. He joined the U.S. Army as an engineer in 2011. Calantoc deployed to Afghanistan with the 101st screaming eagles Bastogne engineers. In March 2020, he was in a motorcycle accident, and lost his left leg. He served over ten years in the service and got medically retired in 2021. After the accident and medically retiring from the military in 2021, he learned he needed to keep active. His therapist taught him that he is able to play many different sports without his leg. He competed in the regional games in Texas. Gene was supposed to be in the Warrior Games in 2021, but it was canceled.” He competed in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games in the summer of 2023 and in the 39th Army 10 Miler in Washington, where he placed 1st overall in the handcycle. “My goal as an athlete is to compete in the Invictus games and hope someday make it to the Paralympics.”
