A torn ACL/ meniscus, torn labrum in the shoulder, and ongoing ENT issues from two face and sinus surgeries brought CPT Nathan Degen to the Ft. Belvoir Soldier Recovery Unit. Throughout these ongoing issues, he was unable to continue flying helicopters and supporting the Soldiers around him, and he says he felt he couldn’t fuel his competitive drive and passion for sports. “However, through the care and support of his family, the health and recovery teams at Fort Belvoir, and the medical staff, he regained the spirit he had been missing. Being able to compete in the Warrior Games would be a personal badge of pride for overcoming physical, mental, and emotional hurdles.” He says it would be an honor to compete with other team members from the Army and DoD who have overcome even more than he had to. “There are multiple mantras and quotes he tries to live by, but the most recently impactful is Love God, Love Others. Serve God, Serve Others, Learn, Earn, Return, and Shooters Shoot (take the opportunities provided to you and make them count). CPT Degen wants to give a special shoutout to his wife if he makes the team, as she will have a toddler and one-week-old child during the games.”
