For Yeoman First Class Angela Harris, the ocean has always helped her soul recharge. In 1998, she joined the Coast Guard, where she could stay near the water, see more of the world, and serve her country. Harris was the victim of a random act of violence that robbed her of her sense of safety. After attending a local adaptive sports event in 2022, Her Navy Wounded Warrior care team encouraged her to continue this journey with Navy adaptive sports. It took her some time to feel safe enough to make the trip to California for her first camp. “Being in an environment where people truly understood what that feels like changed everything. The compassion, camaraderie, and unspoken understanding was healing in a way nothing else has been.” Buoyed by her experience, she participated in Warrior Games in 2024, where she earned two gold medals in indoor rowing. She also participated in the 2025 Invictus Games in Vancouver, Canada, where she earned gold in the 50-meter swim and bronze in downhill skiing. Away from sports, Harris lobbied for change in her home state and contributed to a 2024 public-safety law. She also spends time with her family, growing in her faith, and developing a network for advocacy in mental health and the criminal justice system. She looks forward to returning to Team Navy. “The Warrior Games aren’t about performance, they’re about connection, healing, and rediscovering parts of yourself that trauma tried to take away.”
