Retired Hospital Corpsman Petty Officer 1st Class Demetrius Walker joined the U.S. Navy in 2011 because he wanted an opportunity to grow beyond what his environment offered. He was drawn to the Navy’s strong emphasis on education and knew serving his country would give him the support to build a better life for his family. During the course of his career, Walker suffered a number of injuries and finally connected with Navy Wounded Warrior at a resources fair at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He learned about adaptive sports from a fellow corpsman who had previously participated. They had similar stories and Walker needed that extra push to know that he could still achieve something despite his limitations. He attended his first camp in 2025 and went on to be co-captain for Team Navy at the 2025 Warrior Games in Colorado Springs, Colo. His favorite event is wheelchair basketball because it not only challenged him physically but also mentally, forcing him to consider new tactics, techniques, and teamwork. This mirrored the same qualities that made him effective in uniform. For Walker, Navy Wounded Warrior helped him get over the fear of his limitations by providing a space where he could learn to adapt to his new normal. Being part of the team helped him reestablish his identity and rebuild his foundation. He credits James Gilbert, Micheal Stenhoff, Brianna Funderburk, AP Moore, and Randol Haskins with pushing him to be a better version of himself, not just as a sailor, but as a man. In his free time, Walker enjoys photography.
