Logistics Specialist Petty Officer 1st Class Matt Leon joined the U.S. Navy in 2006 to go to college and serve his country. What began as a planned five-year commitment evolved into a twenty-year career. He traveled to 12 different countries across five deployments, forged incredible friendships, and gathered experiences that shaped who he became as a sailor and as a person. After a needed spinal fusion affected his mobility, Leon fell into a dark place, but Navy Wounded Warrior helped him to find a new perspective on life. Rather than accept a newly sedentary life, Leon joined the adaptive sport program to reclaim parts of his pre-injury life. He realized he could still play competitive sports and give himself space to have fun. He grew to love archery, as it allowed him to clear his mind and focus on small improvements over time. Leon went on to compete for Team Navy in the 2025 Warrior Games and earned bronze in the swimming relay. This year, as a returning athlete, he finds happiness in mentoring the first-time athletes and sharing all the lessons he’s learned on his own journey.
