Christopher Garces

Chief Fire Controlman Chris Garces joined the Navy in 2002 after wanting to do something more meaningful with his life than repairing air conditioners around New York City. His decision to serve changed the trajectory of his life. When he completed boot camp, his father called to share his pride, something Garces always wanted. He committed then to retire from the Navy. Twenty years later, on his birthday, his life changed again when he was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle, leaving him with multiple serious injuries to his pelvis, back, and lower body. He felt defeated, only seeing the things he could no longer do. After his Navy Wounded Warrior care team connected him with the adaptive sports program, he met a host of service members who understand his journey. They’ve become like a new family together. “I fight to heal and move forward. This chapter doesn’t define me, but it’s shaped my strength, my resilience, and my outlook on life. There’s still so much I can do. This experience has not only helped me heal, but has also given me a renewed sense of purpose and drive for the future.” In his free time, he likes to scuba dive, ride roller coasters, visit the beach, kayak, and take his dog on adventures.
