Fire Controlman Aegis Second Class Kayla Saska was born and raised in a huge family in Hereford, Ariz. She grew up loving the outdoors, athletics, and music. In 2017, she enlisted in the Navy.
Two years later, while deployed on the U.S.S. McCampbell out of Yokosuka, Japan, she was involved in two separate shipboard accidents, two months apart, that greatly damaged her knees. In the course of her treatments and therapies, she crossed paths with one of her former senior chiefs who advised her to get involved with Navy Wounded Warrior. Saska attended her first adaptive sports camp in September 2022 where she learned that she can still stay active and competitive even with her injuries. She is now involved in the National Wheelchair Basketball Association for the military, women’s, and adult divisions.
Saska competed for Team Navy in the 2023 Warrior Games Challenge earning two gold medals and one silver. She also competed in the 2023 Invictus Games at The Hague, Netherlands, where she earned three gold medals. At the 2024 Warrior Games, she will compete in field, swimming, wheelchair basketball, and wheelchair rugby.
