Information Systems Technician First Class Maria Edwards joined the Navy in August 2001 out of Houston, Texas. She is married with two daughters and is presently stationed in Hawaii.
Edwards was an avid runner and completed numerous half and full marathons. Between 2017 and 2019, she had serious injuries to her knees that required surgeries, but each time she followed her physical therapy plans, recovered, and returned to sea. In 2022, Edwards was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer. She spent the following two years in treatment, but she didn’t stop. She obtained her associate’s degree in criminal justice and will pursue her bachelor’s degree next. In May 2024, she retired after 22 years of loyal service.
Navy Wounded Warrior helped Edwards stay on track despite her diagnosis. She added adaptive sports to her care plan because she wanted to get back into running. Being part of Team Navy has allowed her to reconnect with a part of herself that she greatly missed. At sports camps, she learned adaptive techniques that allowed her to participate safely.
At the 2024 Warrior Games, she will be competing in track, field, and indoor rowing.
