Gunner’s Mate Petty Officer 2nd Class Jose Gordillo Gomez almost joined the U.S. Army, but changed course after his wife enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Inspired by her actions, he enlisted in 2016, something he called “the best decision ever.” He grew up playing sports and graduated into coaching as he grew older and had a family of his own. One fateful morning as he started dressing for duty, he suffered an ischemic stroke that affected the entire right side of his brain. Within hours, he underwent brain surgery, but the brain swelling lasted another 14 months. He lost functionality and needed to relearn to walk and talk, but he retained his memory, especially his love for the people in his life. His Navy Wounded Warrior care team knew he longed to be active again and encouraged him to participate in adaptive sports. His new sport of choice became archery because he loves the rush of hitting the target. More importantly, Gomez grew his support circle, joining other service members in their own rehabilitation processes. It boosted his self-esteem to rejoin friendly competitions that harken back to his childhood and encourage him to keep going with his rehabilitation. Outside of sports, Gomez finds joy in woodworking, grilling, attending festivals, and watching movies and basketball—pursuits that anchor him in community and family.
